The Elephant Vanishes by

The Elephant Vanishes is a collection of short stories by Haruki Murakami, in which ordinary lives are quietly knocked off balance by the strange and inexplicable. In the title story, a man’s equilibrium is disturbed when an elephant disappears from his town; elsewhere, a hungry couple decide to rob a McDonald’s in the middle of the night.

A woman finds herself the object of a small green monster’s affection, and a sleepless wife slips into a strange, wakeful twilight. Playful, eerie and often funny, these stories make an ideal introduction to Murakami’s singular imagination.
