Samurai Detectives by Shotaro Ikenami

The Samurai Detectives is the first volume of Shtar Ikenami’s historical crime series, translated from Japanese by Yui Kajita. In Edo-era Japan, young swordsman Akiyama Daijiro has opened his own fencing school beside the river and is still waiting for his first pupil when a mysterious samurai arrives with a troubling offer: a large sum of gold to wound the daughter of one of the Shogun’s most powerful advisers.

Refusing to let the matter rest, Daijiro joins forces with his father Kohei, a legendary swordsman, and the formidable fighter Mifuyu to uncover the conspiracy. Episodic, atmospheric and full of swordplay, it suits readers who enjoy historical adventure, Japanese fiction in translation and detective stories with a strong sense of place.
